Ocean Acidification

pH has already gone down.

The Problem

What is this? Isn’t acid dangerous? Why am I swimming in the ocean? Calm down. The ocean’s pH levels have only decreased by 0.1. But, that is still an increase in the acidity of the ocean. in this text, you will find out how we can stop this problem and how we can fix this problem.

What we’re doing

Specialists everywhere have been investigating this affair for a while, and there are numerous resolutions to it already. One of the most interesting ideas is to plant more seagrass. The way the oceans are becoming more acidic is due to CO2 being dissolved into the ocean, which has decreased the CO2 levels by 27% (Average) which is a good thing. But that has raised the ocean’s acidity by 30% (or 0.1 pH). And you know how plants take in CO2 right? The seagrass takes in a lot of CO2. The annual total amount of CO2 absorbed by the seagrass is equivalent to the number of emissions released by the state of New York (190 Million Tons/173 Million Metric Tons). Did you know that trash produces 2,988 pounds of CO2 (Megawatt/hour)? You can also start to reduce your waste to kill two birds with one stone. Speaking of killing two birds with one stone, we can also start cutting CO2 usage, particularly when near the ocean. This will restrict CO2 from being dispersed by the ocean.

End Note

This page was done for a project, and this next part is for that project, you can keep reading if you would like, but don’t have to. The reason I chose to do this project is because one day I want to get a scuba licence and swim in the ocean. I can’t do that when the ocean is burning you alive, so I want to bring awareness to the issue. I have learned that the ocean’s pH levels have gone down by 0.1%, which increases the acidity by 30%. The research wasn’t too hard, but it was thorough. I’m glad I chose this topic because it helped my understand how much CO2 has affected the Earth in a whole. That’s all.
